I reached north welsh black belt yesterday while on wireless at home and did enough more to have the app tell me I had 31 hours to go to reach infinite loop. I set out for my one hour walk doing more lessons, so I was now on cellular data rather than wireless. App sometimes hangs updating when on cellular but this was not the case. Was smooth updating throughout. Aran started giving new words/phrases every minute or two instead of 7 or 8 minute intervals. His speech pattern was also different. Instead of his usual āThe Cymraeg for x is yā, he used different phrasing each time, like āNow it is time toā¦ā, āyou might find it useful to knowā¦ā, etc. He did say āis your head spinning yetā a few times toward the end:)
When I got home after an hour, my phone was almost completely drained and the app said I now had 24 hours to reach the loop, so seven hours of work in one hour? It did feel like going from a 5.7 climb to a 5.11! When I started up again later at home, it was at normal pace.
I did screenshots of the new content from the walk as they came up later. Havenāt decided whether to go back or just see if it eventually catches up.
That sounds a bit glitchy, rather than a deliberate design! Are you on iOS, where weāve been having a few struggles recently?
If it carries on being problematic, do drop admin@saysomethingin.com a line so they can help troubleshoot - but otherwise, llongyfarchiadau mawr for having got so far!

thanks for the quick response and encouragement!
iphoneSE (gen3?) 26 gb freespace on 64 gb storage. ios 26.5 using app
Has levelled out since. It WAS a ride!
Having suffered from the iPhone sound issues, too, I was very glad that the chipmunks on acid are gone again. I was able to continue from ~90% into black belt this week.
Some things Iāve observed
- Progress was very fast. I sometimes got a new word or sentence, had to repeat it once, and was on to the next. Often the new word wasnāt even used in the first prompt after the introduction.
- In all fairness, most of those new wordds were things that had been used for ages in sentences, not really new. Probably just checking off some internal flags in the app.
- Most of the prompts were just single words or short sentences. Definitely not the āOh dear, I forgot half of what I was supposed to sayā kind weāre used to.
- Lots of repetition for words that hadnāt been newly introduced (gĆŖm, sa iān, ennill, ā¦)
- After less than two hours Iām now back into infinite play, and everything feels as it used to.
This was my second run through black belt after I had to start again due the account/permission glitch we had a few months back. I suppose the app lost some info on what I had previously completed and led me quickly through the last part with the latest update. Iām familiar with software development, so I know that database migrations are usually a bit of a pain. Iām still looking forward to the new course that is in the works.
Thanks very much for the input, gentlemen - it does sounds as though we have a general āooh, things are a bit fasterā response since the fix, so Iāll ask the tech team what they can do about that (itās something I think weāve largely solved on the new app, but weāre not quite there in terms of publishing the new app widely just yet, so we do want to make sure the old one is working as well as possible).
And thanks for the software dev understanding! Iād really love not to be involved with software dev at all ![]()
Iām looking forward to the large scale additions (more content and the upgraded approach to listening) for the Welsh course as well. We really just want to make sure everything else is reasonably stable (and launch our stuff for freelance English teachers) before we get our teeth into that. ![]()
So, is this a NEW new app coming? Iāve only just left the old old app (Welsh flag, classic challenges) and got going with the red app and into black belt. I had lots of snags initially with iPhone 12 mini (like the old SE) but those are mostly ok now. Though itās working okay now, itās slower to get started than the old app, not so handy to jump back and forward, and Iām embarrassed to say I miss Coffi Du and the 35 min challenges. My daily discipline of a half hour practice has dwindled a bitā¦
Yes, afraid so! [Except itās exciting because itās so much better and does so many more things].
The old old app used to break in lots of different ways - although I share your hiraeth for Coffi Du, which Iād like to weave back into the new app at some point⦠Weāve also talked about what sort of stuff we could do to offer people daily targets - weāll probably get there at some point next yearā¦
The current main app is much more robust now than it used to be, but we still think that the new app is a huge step forwards - itās definitely much faster to get started. If you donāt mind occasional explosions (weāre still testing it!) you can try it out at www.saysomethingin.app ![]()
Evening. Hope everyone is enjoying this lovely weather. Question about switching over to the new app. If I end my current subscription and subscribe to the new one can I go straight to the black level? And if for some reason I choose to come back to the old one will I resume my position on infinite play or will I have to do the levels again? Thanks for any replies.
Youāll definitely be able to go straight to black on the new one (I think the navigation for moving through the belts is clearer on the new app) - if you come back to the old app, you should just be exactly where you are now - worst case scenario would be that we would need to reset that for you (but I wouldnāt expect that to happen). ![]()
Thats great. Iāll give it a go I think. Since Iāve been on infinte play Iāve been using the app less so hopefully the new app will get me back up to a decent amount each day. Thanks Aran.
Itāll be really interesting to hear your thoughts when we manage to get the new content out ![]()
I made the switch earlier Aran. Really like it so far. Keen to see the new content as well. Any idea when it will be released?
I really donāt want to hang my hat on a particular date!
But itās pretty close to the top of the āto doā list, so I would very, very much hope that weāll have started to release new content (and definitely added new listening content) before the end of the year (although it might be sooner!). ![]()
Sounds great. Especially looking forward to the listening content. I listen to Radio Cymru and podcasts everyday and watch Heno regularly but donāt feel like Iām progressing at all really. Can pick out quite a few words but really struggle with being able to follow conversations. Hopefully your content will help me. Thanks Aran.
