Does “chup chup” mean “simmer” in the following sentence?
“ deja que se cocine todo y haga chup chup unos 5’”
I’m assuming it’s an onomatopoeic word, would that be right?

Yes, apparently, though as I haven’t cooked with anyone here, it’s a new expression to me as well. I’ll have to use it with my Venezuelan housemate and see what kind of reaction I get.

Trouble is he carefully avoids being anywhere near the kitchen when I’m cooking - doesn’t want to be given something to do

Does he ever make arepas?
He does actually - about the ONLY thing he cooks! But he graciously gives me the less burnt one

I asked him last night “if something asks you to ‘hacer chup chup’, what would that mean?”
I got “hervir, calentar, cocinar … algo así” - in other words, something to do with cooking, but he’s not actually sure
