I’m confused by a couple of things in Challenge 23 of Level 1 (Southern). Please could someone explain:
“and I’ll see you there” is “a wela i ti yna” (06:53). Shouldn’t it be ‘ac’ before wela as ‘w’ is a vowel?
“some people think that you’re ready” is “mae rhai pobl yn meddwl bod ti’n barod” (22:21). I thought bod became fod with ti (like with e) so shouldn’t it be “fod ti’n…”?
Well done on picking up on these grammatical points - you are right that it is ac before a vowel and that it’s fod with ti BUT (big but!) there are always exceptions!
The reason why it is ‘a’ here instead of ‘ac’ is because ‘wela’ is actually ‘gwela’ where the g has dropped off in spoken form, but this doesn’t affect the ‘a’ (the ‘a’ thinks the g is still there!)
The reason why it’s “bod ti’n” here instead of “fod ti’n” is because in the spoken language many areas just keep the ‘bod’ for all forms - it may be ‘technically’ incorrect, but it’s actually perfectly acceptable.
