I know that this talented young woman has been mentioned on our forum in the past. But I thought it appropriate to draw your attention to her again…
If you’ve ever watched the BAFTA Award Winning film Pride, (a story based on the true story of a group of lesbian and gay activists from London, who raised money to help Welsh families affected by the British miners’ strike in 1984) you’ll remember that spine tingling moment a young miner’s wife stood up in the Miners Welfare Hall to sing ‘Bread and Roses’:
That part was played by the singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Bronwen Lewis.
As well as having a successful YouTube channel, Bronwen is a Tik-Tok sensation, known for having a “wonderfully warm style that sits between Country, Pop, Folk and Blues”. She’s famous for her varied repertoire, from traditional Welsh hymns to Ed Sheeran.
As a bilingual artist, she enjoys blending cultures by performing popular English pop songs in the Welsh language - yes she’s the one who brought Tom Jones to tears in The Voice when she sang Fields of Gold in both Welsh and English. She has even performed a Welsh version of Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush in the wake of the success of Stranger Things!
During lockdown, Bronwen performed over 45 virtual concerts from her home studio, going viral with her Welsh language covers of famous Pop songs and building herself a huge fan base. She has also appeared in television specials, has supported Max Boyce on tour, and performed on BBC Radio 1.
So if you love listening to traditional Welsh songs, or if you’re fascinated by the idea of enjoying your favourite English language Pop songs through the medium of Welsh, then please check out Bronwen’s media platforms. We’ve no doubt you’ll enjoy singing along, as Bronwen regularly has lyrics available on all her videos.
