Brenhines Aberdaron

I heard this rather lovely song on the radio last night:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPPQb8KXSAg

It’s a song about a local character who was presumably well-known in Aberdaron, though I haven’t been able to work out anything else about the song. Anyone know anything more about it?

My attempted transcription of the words is here (please excuse the gaps/errors):

Fe gerddai i lawr i’r pentre
Bob bore’n arian byw (?)
I weld y byd a’i bethau
Lawr y rhiw, lawr y rhiw
Pob un yn ei hadbanbod
Roedd hi’n ddynes o mor glen
Mor barod ei chymwynas boed i’r ifanc neu yr hen

Ooooooh
Brenhines Aberdaron ydoedd hi
Ooooooh
Ie Cissy Morris Auntie Ciss i ni

Tu ôl drws coch tŷ’r ysgol
Fe guddiai’i phoen a’i gyd
Tywysog ei gymdogaeth
A rwygwyd am byth o’i byd
Colli mab ac ŵyr mor greulon
Colli popeth yn eu sgil
A roedd Duw yn cynnig gobaith yn y capel bob dydd Sul

(Cytgan)

Mae ysbryd ar yr rhostir
Yn y creigiau ac yn y môr
Ei chwerthiniad glyw’n yr awel
O Roshirwaun draw i’r ffordd
Yn y Ship ac yn Nhŷ Newydd
Lawr cornel bob un stryd
A thra bydd Aberdaron
Bydd ei hysbryd fyw o hyd

(Cytgan)

A heddiw yn nhŷ’r ysgol
Mae gwacter lond y lle
Ni chaf alw heibio eto
Am fara ffres i de
Llawn tlotach fydd y pentre
Heb gwmni’r ddynes fwyn
Naeth yn fawr o’r hyn na chafodd
Mor dawel a digwyn

(Cytgan)

Cissy Morris was a member of the congregation in St Hywyn’s Aberdaron as well as Chapel, before she died a few years ago. She was married to John Morris, the village headteacher who in 1977 tried to save a pupil, David Alun, caught in a rising tide but they both perished. She was known to locals as Aunty Ciss.

Ah, thanks! Sounds like she had a tough life – colli mab ac ŵyr mor greulon as well as her husband (I’m guessing ‘Tywysog ei gymdogaeth’ is John Morris?).

Yes, would assume so.

Thankyou for posting the lyrics

Thanks so much All.
I’ve been wondering about the chorus bit for some time and must have missed the earlier topic. I was trying to get how the “Ie Cissy Morris Auntie Ciss i ni” fitted in. That makes perfect sense now. :grinning:

So, something like “Cissy Morris was Aunty Ciss to us”.

Also just to say that Aberdaron is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever been to, apart from the parking
