Baby animal names

Hello all

Just a quick question, does Welsh use different words for young animals as English does? For example kitten, calf, fawn, puppy etc or do we just “cath fach” for example?

Many thanks

Yes.

Also yes.

It’s a mixture. Sometimes there’s a different word (calf = llo, fawn = elain), sometimes it’s “+ bach” (kitten = cath fach, puppy = ci bach), and sometimes there’s a choice of both (fox-cub = cenau llwynog/cadno, llwynog/cadno bach).

After a visit to Slimbridge I read through every goose species description in “Llyfr Natur Iolo” hoping to find the word for “gosling” but aderyn ifanc was all I could find. Are there words like “nestling” and “fledgeling” that describe different stages of development?

gosling - cyw gŵydd or gŵydd fach, or occasionally you might come across glaswydd.
nestling - nythgyw
fledgeling - aderyn ifanc or simply cyw (I haven’t been able to find anything else in the sources I know of)
