Please would you tell me where to find transcripts of Advanced lessons.

Roger

Hello Roger,

There is no way to download the transcripts from within the app, but when you access the advanced content through the web-page instead, there are download links next to the entries. If no such button appears there, then that means that there is no full transcript available for that item (but there should at least be an associated vocabulary file available).

Here is the link to access the advanced content:

@4abf2d65-20f6-42c5-b The old online player doesn’t have the ability to remember where you got to and restart from there, so the simplest way to do it is to download the audio files. They are saved as mp3 files, and will be then played by your device’s built-in mp3 player. These are usually capable of remembering where you stopped, and restarting from that point.

It’s a good question, Verity - truth is, it’s an absolute minefield of complexity - so we’re going with a ā€˜karate belts’ system as a starting point to give people a decent understanding of how they’re doing - and next year, we’re going to be working on mapping that to some external assessment structures, like CEFR and IELTS, which should be helpful. Language assessment is really tricky, though - people can have wildly different levels in speaking/listening/reading/writing - so I would imagine we’ll be trying to fine-tune this and make it more useful for the foreseeable future

I came here to ask exactly this. Excellent explanation. Thank you

Hi, I have found the same,
I did Welsh at school up to exam standard aim South Wales but have just realised that the Welsh I learned is more North Wales than South. I also use hoffi, eisiau, etc.
I have therefore opted to follow North version as I’m more comfortable with it, although I did sign up to a De version of dysgu cymraeg evening class as I presumed I knew De.
In reality I don’t think I matters as people seem to be using a mix so I’d say choose whichever you feel comfortable with.

Hi there - my first question is about the app. I’ve been on the beginner level saying over and over combinations of I want to try to learn how to remember to speak welsh which is great. But when I come back to the app, it gives me a message about a learning timer reset. I am not sure what this means. I feel I’ve got a good understanding of what I’ve been learning and it’s time to move on. Am I supposed to click the fast forward button?

(as a side note, I’ve been doing duo lingo for 3 years, but got tired of the lack of spoken element).
Thanks

Just keep going with ā€˜Play’ @richard-77. There is a Timer function which pops up occasionally if the app has been running for a while, just to make sure you’re still using it and haven’t gone off somewhere and left it running accidentally. You don’t need to do anything with it.

Hi Aran and everyone. I’m just struggling through challenge 10 of level 2 and wondering how on earth I can possibly do these without using the pause button as the last few seem to give me just enough time to draw a breath (never mind think!) before Catrin is there speaking. Should I keep repeating a challenge until I can do it without the pause button? Or just plough on even though I’ve used it? I do seem to be learning, just slow to speak.

@fleur-macindoe the best thing with the Pause button is to hover your finger over it while you start to say the Welsh. If you’re not finished and Catrin starts, you can just tap the Pause then to give yourself time to finish. Or, you can talk over Catrin. She has said that she doesn’t mind :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: but the main thing is not to keep repeating the Challenge until you can do it without pausing. As long as you’re saying something in the gaps, and understanding what comes back, then you’re ready to move on.

You’ll get more practice of the same phrases as you move through, and you can always come back and have another run through once you’re several Challenges further on. That usually shows how much you’ve learnt in the meantime!

Oh diolch Deborah, that’s brilliant. Funnily enough, it feels more as if Catrin is talking over me! Please have a word :joy:…
Anyway, this is great and will help me to catch up some lost ground.

I’ll ask Catrin to be a little more polite

I’ve just started with the app and am wondering if there is a list of the sentences, chunks, etc amongst the resources somewhere? At the moment I am pausing to copy out ones that I want to compare and understand better, but this interrupts the structured practicing. I am completely on board with the ā€˜aural first’ approach, but when I’m finding something confusing and can’t easily backtrack and find it in the audio, something written would be really helpful to me!

I don’t know if there are lists for the app, but there were lists for the pre-app courses which might help, although they may not relate directly to the app levels (I don’t know, I’ve not used the app). This thread might help you Vocab List for Old Course 1 (South)

Hi Claire - I’d really encourage you to experiment with letting go and trusting the system when something doesn’t feel clear for you - whatever it is will keep coming back in different contexts and it will eventually click (and of course you can always ask in here as well). If you get sidetracked into taking notes and focusing on control rather than speed, it’s not going to be optimal learning for you (in our experience).

Having said that, we’re working on something for the new app which will make it easier to browse related phrases for any word (we just need to figure out how to warn people not to spend too much time focusing on that rather than the learning core!).

:slightly_smiling_face:

Many thanks, Sharon - the Old Course seems to be quite a bit different from the app, but I found vocab lists for the New Course in one of you other posts, and that is pretty similar to the material in the app, and very useful for what I was I was after.

Thanks Aran - a way of avoiding getting sidetracked was exactly what I was after, while still having something to refer to when not actually doing the app. I’ve been doing about half an hour most days for the last three weeks or so and made it through 26% of the Green-White belt which feels like excellent progress to me, and is incidentally very reassuring to my concerns that I might be following my mother into dementia as I pass the three score and ten threshold.

That is an extremely impressive rate of progress! You’re doing absolutely superbly, well done. You should definitely just keep on doing what you’re doing, not get worried about the details, and ask in here if you find yourself feeling stuck at any point :slightly_smiling_face:
