Advice please

Hi all. I am new to SSIW and love it. I’ve done the first 25 lessons in level 1, and understood that I needed to get 80% right before moving. So I have done most lessons twice, some 3 times. Now that I am getting Aran’s emails he is very clear just to do the lessons once and move on. I am a bit confused.

Welcome! My two takeaways are 1) this is a learning process for everyone and 2) You absolutely, positively cannot do it wrong. Meaning, if you’re trying you’re doing it absolutely correctly and you are succeeding!

Welcome, welcome!

  • You did most of the lessons twice - this can make no harm and besides, you’ve already done it.
  • It’s said you should have 80 % all correct before moving on - I say if you feel like moving on, then by all means do this - move on. You always have the time to go back for some revision if you feel like something REALLY doesn’t stick (what I doubt it would be neccessary).
  • @aran is very clear in e-mails just to do the lessons once - you can always do this from now on, so no panic if you repeated past lessons.

Don’t be. I strongly believe you’re doing absolutely fine. Dal ati! (go on)

This isn’t the end of the world - but if you’re getting such strong results with only 2 or 3 re-runs, it will be well worth you flying through Level 2 without any repeats and seeing how it goes for you…

The difference in advice is because of what we’ve learnt over the years - the advice in the lessons themselves was recorded a fairly long time ago - the emails are much more recent…

…and to add to everyone’s comments.

The stuff you find hard now, will shortly be replaced by other stuff - and you’ll wonder how you ever found that earlier stuff hard.

It happened with me and my wife, for the first two weeks we kept mixing up and not understanding “I have to…” and “I need to…”, it was the bane of our lives for a good two weeks, and then one day it just clicked.

Likewise when I started learning the short form in later lessons I was like “There is no way on Earth I’m going to ever learn this”. You stick at it, and then 10 days later I was thinking “Ah well, that’s not so bad after all”.

Thanks. It’s good to hear that it gets easier. I am enjoying it a lot. Richard

Welcome to the forum, Richard, and congratulations on your progress - if you are the end of level 1, then you are already a Welsh speaker, you just need the further courses to expand what you can say!

Just to clear up any misunderstanding, I don;t think the course does get easier, because as you learn more you have more little things to confuse you. But all the stuff you are finding difficult now will be replaced by different stuff to find difficult, and you’ll look back and wonder how you ever found that easy stuff difficult.

As long as you know that “difficult” is temporary, and that “difficult” is just a sign of growth and progress, then you’ll keep enjoying it, even if it gets really difficult at times.

And if you put in the same effort into level 2, then you’ll get the same result - stunning progress and a real ability to speak Welsh.

Thanks Iestyn. I understand the old adage in life that nothing ever worth having is easy. Besides, if it were easy it wouldn’t be so much fun. This is a great resource and you are all doing an amazing job. I hope to see you on a bootcamp. Do you have any being organised?

The very best attitude to everything! Except childcare. And painting. But especially childcare…

Anyway, I digress…

The last bootcamp for 2017 has sold out now, but I have started to think about 2018. There will probably be three Tresaith bootcamps in 2018 (April, July and September), with the possibility of a northern luxury bootcamp as well, usually in April.

Do you receive the email, Richard? If not, put your email in the box that comes up from this link, and you’ll get notifications of stuff like bootcamps, online Eisteddfod etc. http://forms.aweber.com/form/99/904832899.htm

And keep doing what you’re doing - it’s obviously working pretty well for you!

Helo Jill! Iestyn runs the bootcamps in the south, @aran runs them in the north, so I’ve tagged Aran for you
