I’m Chris and live in Leicester. I’m 62 now, but when I was an undergraduate in the late 1970s/early 80s I did a degree that involved doing a year’s work experience, in Cwmbrân. I went to Welsh evening classes then, so got to try out some Welsh - but that was over 40 years ago and I’ve forgotten most of it. I think the variant I learned, “Cymraeg Byw” probably sounds quite old-fashioned now - things like “Rydw i’n dysgu” instead of “Dw i’n dysgu” and so on.
My day job involves programming computers for the NHS, but I also did a PhD in medieval history and teach at the University of Wales in Lampeter part time - although not technically in Lampeter as it’s a distance-learning course, so all the staff and students live all over the place. We do get to go to Lampeter once a year for Summer School and graduation, though, which is why I really want to learn to speak Welsh more fluently.
