When to use ‘i’ for ‘to’

I’m confused about when to use ‘i’ in sentences. For example, ‘ no time to work’ is dim amser i weithio’ but ‘no desire to work’ is dim awydd gweithio. I seem to want to add an ‘i’ regularly when there doesn’t seem to be a need for it. Is there a rule that I’m missing?

Many thanks Sharon, using the ‘in order to’ bit is very helpful!
