Hi I’m on challenge 5 and have had a peak at the later challenges. I’m a bit surprised that there is nothing about how to greet people or say what your name is etc or good morning or good afternoon. Just quite a lot of different ways to say I’m learning Welsh. Are we expected to go elsewhere to do the basic stuff?
Well there are a couple of lessons on greetings in SSIW - they are in ‘Old Course’ however which for me is a name which can give the wrong impression (but I suppose it does avoid confusion between the courses) as the content is very useful - perhaps after having gone through some of the newer material in the new style of the new course.
So, the initial greetings, are in old challenge 6c - and then there is a vocab unit which takes starting up a conversation, a little further - which is vocab unit 5.
Rich
I’m a bit confused with the different courses. I saw something about them phasing out the course in favour of the new challenges but this implies you’re meant to access both?
Follow the current course @sianelagreen; it’s not that you’re meant to access both, but there’s still access to the old course, parts of which can be used, as @rich has, to answer questions like your earlier one.
I’ve also found the old course can be useful - but treat it as an ‘extra’.
There was an initial version of the course - and then there was sort of a remake I suppose - based upon experience no doubt.
So, if you are subscribing - you can see all material…I’m not certain if you are on a structured course whether you can see the ‘Old course’. If you use the website there is an Old Course link at the bottom of the challenge pages (if you have access).
If you are using the App, you can swipe past Level 1 and Level 2, and get to Old Course (if you have access). If it isn’t clear I can post screen shots.

I had access with the structured course @rich - and could see it on the iOS app
I’ve got the app and can see the old course. I’m a bit confused as to where we are supposed to be learning . I’ve seen mention of a website and people saying they are on a course they are subscribing to but I can’t see that. I can also see on the app some listening challenges but the first one says 5-9 I don’t know whether that means you start listening when you’ve got to challenge 5. I’m just feeling a bit down as I feel all I’m learning at the moment is how to say I am learning Welsh which isn’t helping a great deal
Oh don’t be down @sianelagreen, with SSIW you have come across the most effective and quickest way to learn. So if there are a few sentences which don’t resonate with you my advice would be to press on - as there will be different ones on the ‘next bit’.
( The sentences are actually just teaching you what rules are - which in time sets you free to use your own words, knowing you are saying it correctly…hang in there…!)
The App and the website are just alternative options - for people who do or don’t have phones in particular (and when you could go out!) eg to ‘take the course with you’ on the App is very handy for when you are in the car or something…so that is all - an alternative route to the same material.
If you are confused about other things just ask here as there are loads of people here who probably had the exact same questions here who are happy to help.
Yes, you are right on the listening exercises - the numbers relate to the challenges which you are working on, that the listening exercises relate to.
I wouldn’t worry about the Old Course stuff I was talking about just yet…keep the faith with the current material as it works, and remember - you are on the way to being a Welsh speaker!
Rich
When people talk about the website @sianelagreen, they mean here, where you are now. Are you on a ‘structured course’, ie 6 minutes a day/ 6 months?
Or have you started just finding the challenges via the website/app for yourself? Level 1/ Level2 etc are the course where we all start now. People can access paying for it in different ways - why some people will talk about suscribing, but you don’t do that right at the start. Does that help?
Don’t be put off eihter by the stage you’re at at the moment - yes, it may seem there are some ‘basics’ you don’t know at the start, but please trust those of us who’ve got further it really does work out - and once you’re that tad further on, you can then sort out those bits - including via bits mentioned above.
If you’ve got access to Slack, happy to chat about it via link rather than typed questions, if that would help. Sometimes it’s much easier to actually talk to someone. And there are Q&A sessions run by @Deborah-SSi there too.
Helo @sianelagreen,
I’ve had a quick look in the database and I can see that you’re registered there, but you don’t appear to have a subscription and you’re not in any particular course. Are you just working through the first few lessons free? That’s possible with the app, but it means you won’t understand what people doing the courses are talking about.
Have a look at https://discover.saysomethingin.com/welsh where you’ll see how to join the 6 Minute a Day course. That is based on the challenges you’re doing, but it gives you extra tasks, explains how to do things like the Listening Practices, and also gives you the opportunity to join in the online group sessions and ask questions of tutors. It will all make a lot more sense if you do that
Ah great that’s what I was looking for
Okay I’ve subscribed it’s now saying use the app Erich doesn’t have anything different on it to what I had before. Should I be using the app if I’ve subscribed or using the website?
You can use both - do what works for you
If you’ve joined 6minutes a day, you’ll get emails each week with extra bits - but they come out on Mondays, so you’ll have a delay before the first email I imagine. You’ll also have access to the online groups @Deborah-SSi mentioned. If you’ve got access now, that could be worth exploring a bit.
I’ve found the app useful when wanting to do a challenge while doing something else, such as walking my dog, washing dishes, etc.(Otto’s Welsh understanding is pretty good now…)
