Tri Nico ifanc eisteddon ar y wal …
Three young Goldfinches sat upon the wall…
The Ravens - Cigfran - were making a lot of noise in the garden yesterday. I think this is a young one but I’m not sure. It is big, but lighter in colour than I expected.
Part of a group of Wild turkeys feeding on sunflower seeds thrown by visitors on a trail near Ottawa
There’s a flock of turkeys that live in an area near where my sister lives in northern California. It is a rural sort of area and you have to be careful driving through it because of them.
Found these round an old decaying Cypress trunk in our garden today.
Those of you who know me will realise that my first question is “can I eat them?”
hey, Huw - that’s exactly what my first thought was! But I don’t know the answer.
ddim yn syniad dda - not a good idea.
edrych fel torhau’r tylwyth teg - looks like sulphur tuft.
Please folks be real careful about eating fungus.
Cheers J.P.
Cyngor da, J.P. Diolch. Sa i’n siwr am “sulphur tuft”
I’ve just looked it up and the gills on mine are more of a lilac grey.
Anyway I’ m not going to risk it. There’s not “mushroom” for error is there?
Huw - oh, OUCH! “not ‘mushroom’ for error” - really!?!
Just trying to have “fun guys”
I have been clearing ivy and brambles from one of those earth banks with a hedge on top (cloddau I think in Welsh) that you get here in Wales. It is a work in progress but a few days afterwards I found these. I don’t know what they are … in any language.
I also found this one which I think might be shaggy ink cap.
Sorry I forgot …Shwmae pawb
suspect the first is (buttter cap) , drw geni dwi ddim yn gwybod enyw cymraeg.
second is shaggy ink cap - cap inc garpiog.
Cheers J.P.
Diolch J.P.
Could (butter cap) be the fungus referred to as ‘witch’s butter’ which in Welsh folklore is used to counter a witch’s spell by sticking pins into it?
As much as i like regional names they can lead to confusion.
the latin names avoid (hopefully).
The butter cap (Collybia butyracea) has a cap and stem
it’s english name seems to derive from the effect of rubbing
a finger across the cap feels kind of slippery like a pat of butter.
Witches butter (Exidia glandulosa) has no cap or stem
and can be found directly on wood. check internet for image.
sorry i could not find on for a photo.
Cheers J.P.
Thanks. I found a photo on the internet and it certainly looks more like butter than butter cap.
heddiw - today.
Hen ysgubor - Old granary.
Morlo llwyd sydd yn cysgu - grey seal which is sleeping.
Cheers J.P.
