I stumbled across this today and thought others might be interested. It’s online access to the old Welsh Tithes Maps from Lyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru (the National Library of Wales). I knew you could look up old field and place names but I thought you had to actually visit the library. Not at all!
It’s a bit glitchy, but I’ve spent hours finding and recording the historical names for the fields around our house, working out what they mean, and being intrigued by some of the meanings, which give a lot of information about how the land was traditionally used, and an insight into life years ago. I know there’s some concern about Welsh names being lost, so I’d recommend having a look at your local area if you live in Wales. You might find out something fascinating, and it’s a good way to stretch your vocabulary!
