Today's daft question

So here I am at Lesson 15 and getting the hang of it. Sometimes I even work out the pronunciation of something all by myself! However…we have mwy pronounced like ‘moy’…so far, so good. So now we are introduced to ‘bwyta’…I assumed it would sound like ‘boyta’…but no. He’s saying ‘bitta’. Confused dot com. Is it another alternative pronounciation?

There’s quite a large range of prononciation for the ‘wy’ sound, as you’ve rightly identified. Some words, like ‘mwy’, are pretty much always the same. Others can vary considerably, depending on accent. Best just to go with what you hear in the challenges for now, and you’ll gradually get a feel for it.

It is pronounced “boyta” in the north but you are obviously doing the south.

All I will suggest is to trust Iestyn and Cat and go along with how they say it and you will end up sounding exactly like someone from their local village.

You can always morph your accent to sound like someone from your local area as time goes on.

Once again - thanks so much for such useful and speedy responses. I figured it was an accent thing…and yes, I’m in the South. I will consult the oracle next door…VERY Welsh! I’ll see what she says and morph accordingly! WHAT fun! :grinning:

Perfect. You’ll be fluent and natural sounding in no time.

As a part of my revision, I’m tending to flick between North and South versions (for no particular reason other than to get a Wales-wide feel). Anyway, “bwyta” and “bwyd” are keeping me on my toes

“bywyd” is another one that keeps me on my toes

To be honest, I’m S Walian and have always pronounced it boyta rather than bitta (similar to the pronunciation of “wy” in place names local to me). For now, I’d just go with what Iestyn and Cat say. Plenty of time to vary your pronunciation accordingly in the future.

Edited to say no such thing as a daft question!

Or possibly: “the only daft question is the one that we were too afraid to ask”.

I do so hope that nobody is ever afraid to ask anything on the Forum, well anything relevant, I mean! :grinning:
I used to find in school and even in College, that I’d ask some question or other and, later, others would come and thank me, because they hadn’t dared ask for fear of looking twp! (stupid).
It is much better for a few know-it-alls to think you foolish than to live in ignorance. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a question on here which seemed daft to me!
The whole point of this Forum is to improve our Welsh and we won’t do that if we don’t ask when we need to know!!!
(End of sermon!)
