Oh Mike bach, that is my whole problem!! I was castigated in Welsh class years ago for saying this terrible word ‘gast’ which I must never ever say again, because it is so terrible!! I said, “But I’m talking about my little dog who is female and if I say “I have a Cavalier bitch,” nobody is shocked!” I was assured that ‘gast’ in Welsh is much, much worse than ‘bitch’ in English and felt terrible foe ages at saying something so shocking!
Ever since, I have had the problem that I end up having to say things like, “Mae gen i ci bach. Mae hi pwdl fach!” In the hope of explaining that she is not male!!! I think @aran has given me some hints, but it seems to be a minefield to me, full of chances of either shocking or confusing people!!
That sounds to me as though someone might have been rather over-cooking their response to you, to be honest!
I’d say it’s pretty similar to English - if you’re obviously talking about a dog, it’s a non-issue. Maybe @CatrinLliarJones will have some thoughts on it (if she gets any spare time to pop on the forum, and is still actually awake when she does so… ).

Poor Catrin!! You clearly cause her to overwork!! Tell her I would love her input as one raised in yr hen iaith, but not if she is asleep on her feet!!!
