Things to do on the Pen Llŷn?

Builders are currently ripping apart our new house in Cardiff (hopefully to put it together again later), so Pip the Dog and I have come to stay with my in-laws in Criccieth for a few weeks.

So far on my list of things to do I have “arrange to visit Aran & Cat”; can anyone make any other suggestions? There are two sorts of things I’d like to do. First, I’d like to go to visit nice places where I can take Pip out walking and look at lovely scenery / mooch around towns (tips for dog-friendly cafés would be good here). Second, I’d like to get the chance to practise my welsh a little; does anyone know of learners’ meet-ups I could get to, e.g. In Porthmadog? (Would leave the dog home, obv.) Or a welsh-speaking knitting group?

Really looking forward to confusing the locals with my Huntu welsh

Would recommend Llanbedrog Beech and a walk up to the iron man, great view. Portmerion Cafe in Portmadoc loads of opportunities to speak welsh (near Network Rail Station) and free wifi to check up on ssiw;-) Maritime Museum in Porthmadog, small but interesting and staff generally speak welsh. Nant Gwrtheyrn, bit of a hair raising drive to the Welsh Language Centre but spectacular views, interesting history and loads of welsh practice. Have a great time Sara, you are going to be spoiled for choice.

If you end up in Criccieth and fancy a bite to eat, I’d thoroughly recommend ‘Y Deli Newydd’. I went there in May and the staff are very friendly towards learners. They were even willing to humour my attempt at ordering in Welsh!

The dog would probably love a walk along the LLwybr Arfordir from Aberdaron round the point as far as you’d like to go. There’s lots of opportunities for conversations around Aberdaron and great views of Ynys Enlli when you get a bit further NW. Call in to see Aran, though, or like me, you may never be able to live with yourself again

We’re off to visit my cousin in Nottingham tomorrow for the weekend, but then back and in situ for the foreseeable future, so looking forward to seeing you…

These are all really great suggestions - thanks so much! I’ll get the map out and start planning my itinerary.

But first … Need to go to Bangor and get Pip a groom. He currently stinks of dead fish after this afternoon’s walk on Criccieth beach. Word of the day: drewllyd!

if you’re going to Bangor, you’ll be passing Caernarfon - so if you happen to be passing on the way back around lunchtime, give me a shout and I’ll join you for a panad!

Buy a copy of the local papur bro ‘Llanw LLyn’ and see where they are holding the next folding session (sesiwn plygu) and go along. You’ll have to use your Welsh!
