Is there something funny about the Welsh cilogram, like is it sometimes used loosely for a pound? Seems unlikely, but I ask because I am currently working my way through a murder mystery called ‘Y Llwybr’ by Geraint Evans (good read, please don’t tell me whodunnit) and the pathologist is carrying out a post-mortem of the murder victim, a young girl previously described as shapely and attractive (‘a’i ffrog ddu yn glynu’n berffaith at bob modfedd o’i chorff siapus’). Says the pathologist: ‘Taldra, un metr saith deg; pwysau, 130 cilogram’. Now, 130 kilograms (a little over 20 stone in old money) would be a good weight for a two-metre tall shot putter or rugby player, but if ‘cilogram’ could mean a pound that would be about right for a young woman so described. Most likely just a slip-up by the author, but I thought I’d check: maybe the Welsh have never quite got the hang of the metric system!
That’s what my money would be… good spot!
