The power of Welsh

Just thought I’d share a small example of how the Welsh language can have an unexpected power in people’s lives. My mum is recovering from a major operation and undergoing the some quite debilitating chemotherapy. She was lent a CD by a friend with some soothing music to listen to. It included the Welsh lullaby “Suo Gân” which I’m sure a lot of you know well. My mum though had never heard it but has really enjoyed listening to it. When I spoke to her last night she wanted me to read through the lyrics in Welsh. I found that I could manage the pronunciation and understand it reasonably well without looking at the English translation (thanks SSiW!). The words are soothing both in meaning and sound. I particularly like, “Paid ag ofni, ton fach unig /
Sua, sua ar lan y môr” - “Do not fear, a small lonely wave / Murmurs, murmurs on the shore”. I think I will be looking out for some more Welsh songs for my mum to listen to.

The beauty of Welsh is wonderful. Good to see it is helping your mum. I hope she makes a speedy recovery.

What a moving story. Warmest wishes to you and your mother.

Many thanks Craig and Aran for your kind words.
