Sports Direct .... (why would we not be surprised.....?)

Bangor Sports Direct orders staff to speak only English…even during personal conversations

Not sure if this means “to other staff” (so they can be spied on, maybe, by Head Office, in English).

Would staff, who understand and speak Welsh, refuse to serve a customer in Welsh? I’ll let you know when I have tried it …

Seriously, I now want to go into SD and enquire about some products in Welsh and see what response I get.

Yes, more disappointing news about a down market corporate brand. However, here’s a positive language based comment.

Our office administrator, who is originally from Poland, is encouraged to conduct business with our regular (Polish) courier in Polish. Also, we have a few Spanish employees who are always keen to speak English, but are encouraged to speak Spanish now and again for a breather.

I for one will be going out of my way to support any decent business that treats their employees (Welsh or other) in a similar manner.

Me too! Unfortunately, I won’t be in Bangor for a while. I was there on Saturday before I read this news article. We’ve got one in Llandudno, though…
