Hello all! I’m new on the forums but have been using SSI for a long time, first to learn some Welsh and more recently Spanish. I’ve never found any other course or method of learning a language half as intuitive and easy as SSI, but the language I really need to learn, Swedish, unfortunately isn’t covered by a SSI course! I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for an audio course in Swedish that is even remotely similar. Thanks!
I’m afraid I don’t know of any off the top of my head - @tygerc might know if there is/isn’t any similar stuff - but if all goes according to plan, we should be able to start taking requests next year (we’re field testing our new course creation tool at the moment)…
No idea but I haven’t been looking. I’m actually refreshing my Swedish with Duolingo. It’s not audio only but they use also audio.
Aha - duolingo seems good, I’ll give that a go for now. Looking forward to the possibility of a SSISwedish course in the future Aran! Any other suggestions welcome! Cheers
What about Memrise? It’s not actually the course but is good for revising the knowledge. You could surely find somethign there too.
O wow, bydd hynny’n wych.
Duolingo seems the best option for Swedish, in terms of being a free App and something you can use everyday and it is a structured way to progress your knowledge of the language. As far as speaking goes, it’s unfortunately one of those languages which is not so well served by resources. There is a Michel Thomas Start Swedish package, which I’m assuming is similar to his other products (the German one is quite good for example):
Much more expensive is Pimsleur but it does give you some basic speaking practice:
If its free resources you’re after then you could take a look at YouTube, which has loads of free stuff, such as this guy called “Swedish Lad” whose various funny videos help you gain vocab:

This page on learning Svenska on YouTube looks good for the basics:

It looks like the “Easy Languages” team have started their Swedish playlist so that could be one to keep your eyes out for as another free resource for listening and vocab:
Other than that there is the FSI (Foreign Service Institute) material that is now in the public domain. That will give you free material but it will be a bit dated and extremely dense to get through.

Maybe like you, I’ll be waiting for the SSI course when it comes out! In the meantime Hey då and good luck!
Here’s one more idea for learning Sweedish
Colloquial Sweedish. As a matter in fact “Colloquial” contains almost all languages you can imagine, but surely many you can’t learn anywhere else.
If anyone reading this thread happens to live in or near Liverpool and be interested in Swedish, please be aware that we have a Swedish learners’ group that meets on most Thursdays. There’s conversation, support for self-teaching, and a fika (Scandinavian coffee and cakes). See the Liverpool International Nordic Community website for more details.
I’m also in the process of cloning our Swedish group to create a Welsh one that will meet on Mondays. It starts next week. More details are on the Liverpool Welsh website.
I just wanted to say a belated thanks to all of you for your suggestions - I’m using duolingo and I’ve ordered the Michel Thomas method CD, as well as topping it up with various youtube videos. Tack så mycket!
