I have just finished mynediad 1 at my local centre and have already booked mynediad 2. But now I am not sure what to do. Looking through mynediad 2 there is nothing new. I phoned the centre today and she said that there was new stuff and I had to do that before moving on.
I am not sure if I am brave enough to cancel it and concentrate on SSIW/memrise/gareth king books. But I would probably (definately) learn more that way
Iām not really the best to advise you, save that I used conventional methods for years without much sticking and would recommend SSiW to anyone!! (To be fair, each time I started learning again, I realised I did actually remember quite a lot, but it didnāt pop into my head easily!!!)
But, can you get to a local group to speak Cymraeg regularly?? That is what I never really had and I suspect it makes a lot of difference whichever learning method you use!!
Yes I am lucky here, there are a few different groups that meet up frequently to chat
Having a regular chance to try out your Welsh conversation skills (however much they may be) is one of the most important things, I think. And from what Iāve seen and heard, as long as you have that opportunity, SSiW will take you much farther much faster than Mynediad.
No idea what Mynediad is like, but from reports Iāve read on here before, it can be fairly complementary to an SSiW course and may offer you more vocabulary, as well as hopefully chance to speak to other learners in Welsh, and also ask questions of the teacher. So unless you canāt spare the time, or itās expensive, I personally would not rule it out.
But donāt stop SSiW of course.
If you are worried about being frustrated, you could always ask to skip a year and go straight onto Sylfaen.
You donāt āhaveā to do anything before moving on. Your time, your money.
If you can afford the time and the money you could possibly do two classes at two levels, mynediad 2 and sylfaen 1. If there really is no new material in the mynediad 2 you will just be revising, and there is no harm in that, and you will be stretching yourself with the sylfaen material.
Or you could ask if they were happy for you to register for Sylfaen and go back to mynediad 2 if they were right and there were gaps to fill.
In my experience (and I did mynediad 1 and 2 before I heard of SSIW), the first levels of the conventional courses are a bit like a ladder and you do need to learn this bit before that bit makes sense. However, as you move on itās more like a tree, or a jigsaw puzzle, and there are bits here and there to fill in. As an SSIW learner you will have learned more bits than those on mynediad 1/2 but may not know why you know what you know. Thatās the down side of a āgrammar liteā approach. It really depends on what you want.
But I would go back to the first thing I said. Your money, your time, your choice.
Thank you for the replies. I am not very good at decisions!
to make matters worse I tried the bbc level finder and that said uwch (but with one guess) so probably canolradd.
I am meeting up with my class in the pub tomorrow so might see what others are doing
Thanks again
Nothing worse than being bored. Skip ahead!
On a tangent from your question Iām on challenge 21 of level one and I have done two terms of Welsh for parents but because of a new job I canāt continue it. Apparently it is equivalent to the mynediad. When I spoke to the mynediad tutor before she said I would have to start at beginning of mynediad if I ever did it. (I forget how far through Welsh for parents I was then) My new boss has a pot of money to pay for Welsh classes do I start at beginning of mynediad or maybe jump to second year of mynediad?
What is this have to all about? You are not a beginner, donāt start at the beginning. With 4 more SSIW challenges you could go on boot camp!
Will your boss pay for boot camp, or half of it?
If not, or if it doesnāt work for you, sign up for something that feels far ahead, even Sylfaen 1, being prepared to go back to Mynediad 2 if necessary. If you start on Sylfaen 1 get hold of the Mynediad book anyway and any glaring gaps, fill in yourself in between lessons. If you have a good tutor they will help with the gaps.
People sometimes skip whole levels. Iāve met people who have done from Mynediad to Canolradd or Sylfaen to Uwch. There are people who only do 2 terms a year because of a long holiday, or a work commitment abroad.
And as @mikeellwood said, keep up with SSIW of course.
Thanks everyone. I have spoken to my tutor and been to an open evening at the centre. I am going to try sylfaen 2. I have done some of it already (SSIW seems so much further ahead!) but I canāt do canolradd in my village. If it doesnāt work out I might just go to meetings in the pub and await the new level 2/3.
Theresa if you have done most of course 1 definately donāt do menediad 1. Have a look through the books and see where you think you are up to.
If anyone wants to fill in any possible grammar-gaps, it might be worth getting hold of Gareth Kingās āIntermediate Grammar and Workbookā, or even the Basic one as well. Much of it will be familiar, but there may still be some useful additions (thatās what I personally found), plus loads of example sentences and some extra vocabulary.
To get the feel of how he writes, here is a short excerpt from āBasic Grammarā, page 76:
āā¦But whatever you do, donāt let anyone tell you that the generalized SM is somehow āwrongā simply because the literary standard doesnāt allow it. As with any living language, itās what native speakers say that really countsā.
I like it.
I emailed the area organiser and she suggested mynediad 2 so that means a follow on from my cymraeg iār teulu course with that one term missing. This is what I hoped for and what made sense in my head
Diolch pawb. I went to my new class tonight and it was good. There is some vocab I donāt know and it seems to be more ācorrect/formalā language but all the basic structures are there. Diolch SSIW
That sounds as though youāre going to be able to get the best of both worldsā¦
