Hello there, I’m just finding my way around the forum and have been reading a bit.
I read in the guidelines that comments such as “+1” or “I agree” are not preferred and that it’s recommended to “like” the comment instead, so I’ve been handing out quite a few Likes where I read things I, well, liked—so many that I got a message telling me “there is a limit on the number of times that action can be performed per day; please try again in 23 hours”.
Is this limitation on purpose? From places such as Quora (upvote) or Facebook (like), there is no such limit and it seems to be the done thing to upvote/like whatever you think is useful.
Are Likes on these forums a bit more “special” and you should only give them out for particularly valuable content, and that is why there is a cap on them?
In the normal course of events, it is probably only newer forum members who are going to hit this, as they discover older postings, and may see things they want to “like” at a higher rate than longer-term members.
I suspect it is built into the software as a safeguard against certain forms of abuse.
I have never seen any guidelines issued by SSiW as such.
I will tag @kinetic in case he wants to comment on the software side of things.
That makes sense - I’ve been reading some threads that had been going on for months - regular visitors would read those threads bit by bit rather than all in one day.
As much as I know this software (well I won’t say I know it REALLY well, but still quite well), it’s a bit different from all other forums you might be used to and different to FB also. However I never encountered the message that there would be limited amount of likes but yet, you had to give quite amount of them to receive a warning though. However as much as I can see in your profile you’ve given 50 likes in the range of 2 hours so here might be that it is rather time stretched limitation to the amount of likes then the number of likes itself. I believe if you tend to give relatively big amount of likes, responses or whatever in relatively short time (let’s say an hour, two hours or so) the software will allert you that you should give “space” to other members or it will block the activity (like liking in your case) for limited time.
I never gave that amount of likes in the range of 2 hours so I possibly can’t know is this limited only to newer users (which you’re actually not that new at all but rather not so active for that matter) or is it simply limited to all members no matter of the status and how new to the forum you are.
In that matter, I’ll let you allert to one more thing which might surprise you but is not to be afraid of. This is the warning when you put more responses in a row in the same topic regardless are there other posts inbetween yours or not. It will say something like “let other members have their share too” however if you have the valuable information to share or you think you can constructively contribute to the topic, you can ignore the message. No harm will be made to you unless you’d behave like someone who really spams the topics.
But yes, I’d be glad to hear @Kinetic’s opinion/comment on this too.
