Less welsh speakers watching s4c

Here’s a link to Golwg’s report on the latest figures.

“According to Chief Executive of S4C, Ian Jones, the main challenge for the channel is to attract the people who use the service occasionally to return more often to watch S4C content.”

Here is a list of the main findings for 2013/14:
•The channel was watched by 6.5 million people in Britain in 2013 (which has risen from 5.3 million in 2012)
• 5.2 million people watch the program online (which has risen from 2.8 million in 2012)
• 1.2 million people watching events on television every year (I’m guessing this means the Urdd, Eisteddod, Welsh show, etc.)
•There are 194,000 Welsh speakers in Wales who watch S4C every week on average: less than the 216,000 who watched 2012.
• Welsh speakers watching the channel for 8 hours 4 minutes per week (2012: 7 hours 3 minutes)
•There are 224,000 visits to S4C website per month (2012: 201,000)

I wonder when S4C will release the findings of their recent survey they did for Viewers outside Wales? I would be very interested in seeing the results of that!

It looks like the number of online viewers is catching up with the number of broadcast viewers. Not sure what that implies though.

That’s the case with English language channels too - it’s probably because people like being able to watch what they want, when they want to, sans adverts.

Some/much of the drop due to the number of repeats maybe: a scenario that infects every channel.
