Learning buddies list?

Is my memory playing tricks on me or did there use to be a list of people looking to meet up with other learners on this site?

It was called Ffrindiaith - I went looking for it recently also. It never was of use to me as there was no one near me in the west of Ireland… but I thought I’d check again  Btw I’m of Cornish descent on my Dad’s side also.

You can never have too many Cornish people in one place. :+1:

To the best of my knowledge, Ffrindiaith was an initiative that was only partially successful. I think it’s fair to say that it’s been largely replaced now by Welsh Speaking Practice on the Slack website, where we have 1-to-1 chats with each other as well as group hangouts. To receive an invitation to join, send an email to: admin@saysomethingin.com - with ‘WSP’ in the title.

In the meantime, Stuart, if you’d prefer a Skype chat to get started, I’d be very happy to have one - just send me a direct message.

I seem to remember there were lots of people listed on ffrindiath but I don’t remember many replying to messages I sent.

Thanks for the Skype offer. Might leave it for a bit while I hoover up a few more of the lessons though.

Hopefully there’s a real life meeting in your area. Perhaps check with @Deborah-SSi

I somehow bypassed Ffrindiaith - I think maybe I just wasn’t ready at that stage - but some of the comments I remember reading were very similar to your own experiences.

Your profile note mentions that you live in London so perhaps you know that the London Welsh Centre in Grays Inn Road has Welsh Classes? It seems a bit more pricey than when I attended according to this link but I really enjoyed my evenings attending classes there about 16 years ago and it might be a good place to find people to speak Welsh with. The City Lit also do Welsh classes and have a long-established Cornish group if you ever wanted to branch out (something I regret never having explored in all the years I lived there!). Pob lwc!

I’ve been to a couple of the Sadwrn siarads at London Welsh Centre. Unfortunately I tend to work nights and an unpredictable work pattern which makes it awkward to commit to a regular evening class.

In an ideal world it would be nice to learn Cornish but, much as I love the place, I can’t really see myself moving back down there, whereas I’d love to move back down to Cardiff sometime. I just think there has to be some practical reason for committing to the huge task of learning a language and personally I can’t see the benefit for me of learning Cornish. Fair play to anyone who does though.

I’m in a similar place wrt Cornish - although I have learned a little and hope to keep my oar in. Whether learning Welsh or Cornish we are all doing our bit to keep the Brythonic languages alive. You are right; having a purpose is really important.
