Does this mean that Bangor is y coed was monoglot Welsh majority back then?

Im Maelor Saesneg, the Saxon land (43 square miles, 5,948 inhabitants), a detached portion of the county, Welsh has wholly disappeared since the days of Henry VIII. When Defoe visited Bangor Monachorum {Bangor Is-coed}, about 1730, he failed to procure a guide capable of giving the explanation required. At the present day (=1878) English alone is spoken.
Sounds like the complete opposite to me…

Certainly seems to mean that Welsh vanished from there between 1730 and 1878. A lot can change in 148 years!!!
