I have heard that there is an idiom for on and off but ive misplaced my idiom book so wondered if anyone can help me please.
so not just on (ar) and off (oddi ar), but as in turn on and turn off? troi ymlaen and diffodd would work
Can’t help with the idiom, but just wanted to clarify what you meant - am I right in thinking that you’re after an idiom for ‘repeatedly/at intermittent intervals’? (As in “He’s been poorly for the last few weeks, on and off.”)
It wasn’t an expression like pob hyn a hyn (every now and then), hyn a’r llall - this and that? There are quite a few expressions using “tro”, maybe one of those?
Nawr ac yn y man, (now and again) also.
Edited to add, intermittent is ysbeidiol, but that’s not an idiom, of course.
Sorry I realised this morning some context might help. I want to say that I have been learning Welsh on and off for six years.
In this context, Geiriadur yr Academi gives:
bod yn ail â pheidio
or
yn ysbeidiol
This just feels like something complicated to say in Welsh - nothing fits it perfectly - Catrin reckons she would say ‘ar adegau’…
So it would perhaps be simpler to say I have been learning for about 6 years. Thanks for the suggestions
