It can feel like a thrillingly secret society where I live in South Wales too! The Welsh speaking community is very much here, but I’d like to be a part of it!
Couldn’t agree more!
… I’ve always been fascinated by it (along with every language I’ve encountered!) ever since I first visited Wales on holiday as a child, along with the history and myths/legends of the region.
As with every language I’ve learned (French, Italian, German), I hope to be able to engage with its history and mythology “in its own words”, from its own perspective as opposed to the English versions which are often told from an English perspective - I don’t know if that is true for Welsh, but I’d like to find out.
You are going to have so much fun with Welsh! I would say this is very, very true for Welsh ![]()
I want to be a Welsh speaker because I live in a small Welsh village and believe I should learn Welsh. Also my family was originally from Wales.
I hope that by learning Welsh I will be better able to understand everyone at local community events and take a more active part in the community.
I want to be a Welsh speaker because I enjoy learning languages and I would like to help preserve Welsh so it continues to be spoken in the future.
We moved to Wales 18 years ago and my son is bilingual. I want to be able to talk to him in Welsh
I want to learn to speak Welsh because…
Despite having lived in Wales for 30 years I never properly learned the language… you don’t need my excuses list…
Now I live in England and there’s a hankering to return, but this time to be able to participate fully in the community and to play a part in the survival of this beautiful language.
I so appreciate this course, I’m up to challenge 12 and it feels almost like a magical process.
Diolch o’r galon
I want to be a Welsh speaker because I want to be able to speak the native tongue of the country I’m living in. I’m hoping to be able to hold a conversation with Welsh speaking friends and acquaintances soon.
Because I learnt from family history that my grandfather was a fluent Welsh speaker, but for social and cultural reasons my mum was not raised as a Welsh speaker, nor was I, so I need to get the language of my heritage back in my family. Much of his family were Welsh speakers, too. I also feel a profound connection to my past when speaking it, something which, from learning other languages, I’ve never felt before.
Oh yeah and I’m born and raised in Wales but can’t speak much, so that’s an added incentive.
I love Wales and I would love to speak Welsh easily and fluently when I move there next year if possible!
