Guaranteed fluency course alongside normal course?

Hi…

Hoping to move to Cardiff next year, so about to jump into learning some Welsh… it seems only fair!

The 2 year option sounds really useful, but I can’t find any info about how far it compliments the normal SSI course. Can anyone tell me if it covers the same ground, whether to start together or only do one etc.

Thanks for your help, and apologies if this has been covered before… couldn’t find it when I searched

Hi Paul,

The 6 Month course and the 2 year course cover the same material - Levels 1 and 2. The 6 month covering it in a shorter time scale, with the 2 year taking a more relaxed approach.

I guess the question is, how much time do you have that you can devote to learning? My understanding is (correct me if I’m wrong here @aran ) for the 6 months course you’re probably going to need about 2-4 hours per week - and if you’re doing the 2 year course, you’re going probably going to need about 1 hour per week.

Following this, there is also a Level 3 - 25 half hour-ish lessons.

By completing Levels 1 and 2 and putting in the practice during the hangouts etc, you will definitely become an extremely confident and very functional Welsh speaker - fluency will then come with completing Level 3 and getting practice when you go out in the big bad world and start speaking Welsh out in the wild

And it’s possible to go through the material by yourself, although it’s obvious from reading people’s comments that being on the 6 month or the 2 year course offers people a lot of extra support and encouragement.

Up to the end of Level 1 at the moment, although that’s subject to change - we’re seeing results that are so much better on the guided programmes that we’re now thinking in terms of offering some free time on the courses instead of unguided free access to Level 1…

That sounds pretty much ideal for me. I know a bit of structure goes a long way to keeping the enthusiasm up

About the only stumbling block I can imagine is being too enthusiastic and wanting to do more, but I can cross that bridge if/when I come to it…

Thanks for the very helpful replies, and I look forward to signing up in the next day or so.

A few people on the course are tackling that issue by taking part in unscheduled 1:1s and impromptu hangouts on the community that you’ll get access to when you sign up - so you’re getting more than your fair share of practice in, without speeding ahead in the course.

Thanks for the advice everyone, much appreciated. Have just signed up for the 2 year course and set things up on slack. Looking forward to being a part of the community here
