Dechrau v cychwyn; dweud v meddai?

I definitely read varieties just as versions of gallu and medru are used in the same sentence (without the subtle difference in meaning) just to avoid clunkiness (I assume).

Probably it is sometimes for that stylistic reason, yes…

I’m sure I was taught at school that it was good to vary the speech tag (he said/he retorted/he shouted) but more recently, probably sometime in the 70s or 80s, the thinking on the matter changed and people decided that “said” is more or less invisible and therefore a better option than variety just for variety’s sake.
