Clywais i ddim/Chlywais i ddim

In level 2, challenge 3 there are two slightly different versions of ‘I didn’t hear’ - the lady says ‘Clywais i ddim’ but the man says ‘Chlywais i ddim’ …I think the latter is more grammatically correct, so is this a deliberate variation?

You are right, Chlywais i ddim is the correct negation, as in negations the first letter takes an aspirate mutation if possible, and a soft mutation otherwise. Some speakers prefer the soft mutation, so you may hear Glywais i ddim.
In my experience it’s rather unusual that the mutation is dropped altogether (which gets you Clywais i ddim), but you’d still be understood by everyone.
