Now this is one i think i remember correctly (waits to be proved wrong under a tin hat).
Wedi cael - have had (it’s historical).
dw i wedi cael amser da’ - i have had a good time.
No doubt i mis-use cael often, but i’m busy trying to build vocabulary so cael can fall into place when it does.

When I had the same problem with cael I started to think about it in two ways (sure there are more):
Seeking permission or
Getting something you don’t yet yet have
eg:
Dw i’n cael mynd allan? - “Am I allowed to go out” rather than “can I go out?”
Ga i parcio yma? - Am I allowed to park here rather than can I park here?" (using the welsh equivalent of can would mean you were asking if you had the ability to park here rather than permission to park here)
or
Dw i’n cael petrol - I acquired (instead of got) Petrol
I am sure it is not perfect and there are millions of exceptions, but it worked for me.
