Brief Welsh encounter in Hamburg

It was the 60th anniversary of my school and they had a special programme to which they had invited alumni.

I saw that a few teachers who taught me more than 20 years ago are still there, including my PE teacher, Mr Jones.

I happened to come across him briefly; I’m not sure whether he recognised me. He asked me, “How are you?” and I replied, “Sut dach chi? I’m fine, thank you”.

He asked me whether I was Welsh

I said no, I was just learning the language. And asked him whether he spoke Welsh. He thought for a moment and answered, “Tipyn bach.”

So now I know  I had occasionally wondered whether he might have been a Welsh speaker. I’m not sure what part of Wales he’s from.

When I quickly read the thread title, I thought it was about a Welsh version of “Brief Encounter”.
(That could be funny, if true, cf. Victoria Wood’s version … ).

I believe there is actually a German version around, and I’ve also seen part of a version co-starring Richard Burton (in English, but he could have done it in Welsh), and, somewhat implausibly, Sophia Loren. It was ok, actually. Must try to see it all some time.

What I always hoped someone do would be a sequel to the original, set perhaps in the 1960s.
The social mores had changed so much by then, that if Alec and Laura and met again then, they might have wondered what all the fuss what about.

That’s a rather lovely story - thanks for sharing it, Philip!
