Looking forward to the release of the Beta Portuguese version. Out of interest will it be Brazilian Portuguese or Portuguese from Portugal or a fusion of sorts!? I’m enjoying the French beta course at present
Prompt: ‘the Italian for I have is’ - female voice static/wind noise, male voice (correctly) ho.
For “I have, because” the female voice pronounces the /h/ (male voice, correctly, doesn’t; female voice doesn’t elsewhere).
Mmm, good question - in due course, we’ll definitely offer both - I’m not sure what we’re doing at the moment, I’d probably guess at peninsular Portuguese…
When I added the app to my second phone and logged in, it appeared to start me off in the French course at the beginning, NOT where I was on my other device. Is this how it is supposed to work —that is, device-dependent rather than account-dependent?
By pure coincidence, yesterday both my wife and me had messages encouraging us to take a look to the speed settings - despite us being on wholly different parts in the journey towards becoming a Welsh speaker (she has just earned her green belt, I’m almost at brown). I’m not hugely bothered by it (she does miss the settings very much though), but apparently there are still encouraging messages that need weeding out - despite your best efforts
Hi @rich have the pricing options changed for subscriptions? My mother wants to sign up but is only offered £12 per month, no £120 per year visible.
Actually advance purchases (like for a full year) will be available as gift tokens anytime soon.
But the default offer is now £12 per month
This is not expected behaviour. The whole point is that progress is supposed to be account dependent rather than device dependent
Apologies for this. @rich will get the tech team to have a look at your account and see if we can work out what’s going on.
Pressing skip should get you back there pretty quick hopefully.
Thanks.
Yes, the work on this is in the pipeline - there are just a lot of other things in the pipeline also!
Rich
We have lots of people using multiple devices and we all have multiple devices here…so there must be something about this situation.
Could you tell me how you are logging in? e.g. Email or social media - on each device (don’t share details here - switch to DM is they are relevant and you to share them).
( We will be able to look at your underlying account / progress.)
Rich
Couple more crossed wires on the Italian, both on little prepositions when defined (not on subsequent use in longer phrases), both female voice only (male is fine).
‘The Italian for with is’ something odd, like longlonglong or something. (Male voice ‘con’.)
‘The Italian for of is’ several words in Chinese
(Male voice ‘di’).
Yes, thanks for this. Fantastically helpful.
The errors in the audio files are almost always for the very short phrases or single words.
It’s because the voice generation system uses context to work out how to pronounce the words.
We haven’t found a way to fix all the errors automatically.
We’re working on it. But at the moment there’s something like a 5% error rate on short phrases.
And instead of spending a lot of resources trying to reduce this error, we are using the beta phase to crowd solve the identification of these errors and running them through again.
So, this is all extremely helpful.
For example
If we are using a word like:
content
even in English, it’s not possible without any context to work out which pronunciation is required
I’m content with my life at the moment
I need to update the content on my website
And then of course you have other languages that also use the Romanised alphabet and may have the same words:
je suis content
etc.
It’s a problem we are enjoying coming to terms with!
And also,
non-deterministic systems occasionally just glitch out, do something totally unexpected
and this tendency is more pronounced when there is less context
we have some reasonable solutions at the moment, but we’re definitely not going to catch everything
and we think it’s better to press on and release more languages rather than wait until we have a 100% solution
Because we’d never get there!
And also, in our experience of alpha testing - since most phrases are accurate, especially the longer ones, the brain will work it out.
Most brains enjoy an element of surprise every so often, even if the owner of the brain often doesn’t think so!!!
Anyway, we are working on some fuller explanations of what to expect in general in our courses, which will help people realise to what extent these issues are methodological intentions, or acceptable inaccuracies.
Lots of fun
So once again, this is incredibly useful feedback you’re giving us, so please keep doing what you’re doing.
It looks like the app (North Welsh) is having a breakdown. The displayed text in this session (just after having learnt “less time”, so still purple-black belt) is suddenly totally different from the vocal prompts. And not just the previous/next, but completely different… (or is this just @aran 's tactic of discouraging looking at the text? )
Italian prompt ‘the word for Saturday’ - male voice correct, but female voice ‘disse ti, sábado’.
Also, where @aran suggests making up sentences beginning with “I’m going to”, I’m not aware of having had that (except in penso di andare ‘I think I’m going to go’ structures) - although that may be because I keep skipping ahead.
@CalonGoch-Felen that’s something we need to look into. It’s probably just a file or two in the wrong place, as I’ve been testing a bit further on than that and everything has been fine. Thanks for the heads-up
A (less serious) issue that I have been having since downloading the new app is that the syncronisation between visuals (text and countdown) and vocal input has been off by sometimes one second, sometimes a bit more. It’s not really crucial and the only thing it really did was damage my concentration for a bit (especially when i wasn’t sure what the desired output for the previous sentence was AND the next prompt was a long whopper) - so I did not report this yet because I assumed it was due to my phone being old, but now we’re at it I might as well raise it too…
Diolch! That is something the tech team are currently working on to improve the synchronisation.
Ok, interesting - and for avoidance of doubt, is this still the Northern Welsh course which is not perfectly in sync?
Re synchronisation – I’ve noticed it to be slightly late, but not entirely out, on the Italian. Essentially, you hear the prompt, then it appears after a slight delay, then the first Italian speaker starts before the English has gone from the screen. It might need tweaking, but I did consider that it might also be a design decision, to make you try to work a bit before the prompt appears.
Tl;dr - if it’s a design decision, I’m quite happy to trust the team to make those; but if it’s not intended & you’re looking at synchronisation elsewhere, it might be a thing.
