While bod does not actually mean “that” (it’s the base form of the irregular verb “to be”), its function in the sentences you get at this stage makes “that” a useful rough translation. The difference between bod and bo’fi is simply that one comes with a pronoun and one doesn’t.
Bo’fi is a shortened, slangy version of bod fi, which itself is less than perfect grammatically… (For formal writing purposes, you’d want fy mod i but you’re unlikely to hear that said in casual conversation.)
For now, it should work well enough to think of bod as “that” (which may be followed by he/she/the dog etc) and bo’fi as “that I”.
