BBC Radio Wales

Great discussion on radio Wales at the moment, our Arun is on there I think!

Could someone give an iPlayer link to the programme, or at least the name of or approximate time the programme went out (although I guess it was around 10.30 UK time? (17th June).

Diolch o flaen llaw.

With Jason’s pronunciation of my name, you’d have to be forgiven for spelling it like that (but it is in fact Aran :sunny: )…

Edit: yup, it was about 10.30, maybe a little after, Mike.

Diolch Aran.

Here is the link below. Discussion starts at around 41 minutes in, and lasts for about 16 minutes:

Very interesting, especially the “social awkwardness” point that someone made.

(Regarding discussion on radio) That’s why I many times tweet in Cymraeg even if I am not Cymres and my language is not good at all.

Just one to say me something nasty for that, he/she’d see my raging forces!

Well worth a listen…lots of good points made.

Really interesting discussion. I think unfortunately it’s a common thing for bullying and ignorance on social media, and I can see how people in the rest of the UK may sometimes have this idea it’s ‘pointless’ to learn Welsh as we can all speak English… but it really surprises me if Welsh nationals give other Welsh nationals a hard time over their level of aptitude as the presenter had experienced. I would have thought the nation would be united behind their wonderful language. As it isnt a ‘widely’ spoken language, perhaps 1st language, 2nd, & learners can maybe feel like we are in quite an exclusive club… but we must keep it alive and thriving, especially in WALES. Its high time it was compulsory throughout Wales!

Not sure how you’d go about doing that, but perhaps there could be occasional exercises where specific groups (perhaps schools or firms) could have days of “Bootcamp rules” (where the kids aren’t allowed to speak English in break times for example, something we heard about on the programme). Or families with children who learn / speak Welsh at school (but may not at home) are encouraged to promise to speak Welsh only for at least 24 hours, or something like that.

A very interesting discussion. One word that came up several times was ‘normalise’. The purpose of our Welsh group is not only an opportunity to practice speaking Welsh in a safe environment but also to normalise the language to people in ear shot of our group too. Hence we use a busy pub! And I am happy to say that we have never had any negativity. Instead people are curious, glad to hear the language and a common phrase ‘oh I wish I learnt to speak Welsh’ etc.
the word ‘normalise’ became our word of the week as there was some debate about our group and where we should be based and below is Owain’s explanation of the word ‘normalise’ in regards to our group.
