A pronunciation guide

Helo Pawb,

I know that we at SSiW don’t need pronunciation guides. We learn the other way round, by saying, and then associating sounds with words we can already say. However, I’ve written this novel with lots of Welsh words and phrases and the publisher would like to include a pronunciation guide. Does anyone know of a good one that is in the public domain. I’m no great fan of re-invernting the wheel.

Hi Elizabeth, there are quite a few free ones around according my search engine, the main question is probably what sort of detail you want: phonetic guides (mainly how to pronounce letters), examples (words with English pronunciation approximation), that sort of stuff

The Cycling Wales one looks useful to me: http://www.cyclingwales.co.uk/welsh.html

Yes, I have them in books too. But I’m not sure that I’m allowed to just copy other people’s work.

And on the same website you recommended, I couldn’t resist this…

How about a link to a recording of the words? If you host that on your author website, you’re giving your readers a good extra reason to come along to your site (and sign up for emails etc)…

@elizabeth_jane Even better, what about a link to SSIW, if that is allowed @aran ? Encourage a whole new group of people to learn? Is that an option? Liz, your Welsh is so good, you could write a short glossary yourself for those who don’t want to go deeper?

Ooh! Nice idea. Let’s talk how to do sound recordings some time…

I will mention SSiW in the end notes on the Welsh language. As well as in the acknowledgements. But this is simply a visual to go with the word list. I like Aran’s idea of a link to my site.
